Hello Students,

Here is an important news from Central Board of School Education (CBSE).

CBSE wants to introduce two levels for Science and Social Science similar to Mathematics.

In view of this, we will here examine CBSE’s current proposal point-wise:

Point -1

CBSE will introduced two tier difficulty levels for two subjects – Science and Social Science in 9th class from 2026-27 session. These two levels will be called – Standard and Advance. Board exams for these two tiers will be introduced in 2027-28 session for class 10.

Point-2

In 2027-2028 final exams for Science and Social Science, there may be –

(A) a single question paper with a separate section for advance difficulty level questions in it.

(B) Separate papers for standard and Advance levels.

Point-3

Students will be given a choice to opt for a certain level – Standard or Advance in Class 9. However, they are also likely to be given an option to switch difficulty level in Class 10. It means a student opting for Advance level in 9th Class can switch to Standard level in 10th class, while students with standard level can switch to Advance level.

Point-4

Presently, CBSE offers two tier difficulty level only in Mathematics, called Basic and Standard. Syllabus for both tiers is same. However, CBSE takes separate papers for each level. However, difficulty level of questions in question paper of Standard Mathematics is higher than that of the Basic Mathematics.

Point-5

In case of the proposed two levels for Science and Social Science, it is more likely that textbooks for these subjects will have an additional section for Advance Level of difficulty.

Point-6

NCERT is likely to introduce new/revised textbooks for class 9th from 2026-27 session. It is expected that all the relevant changes will be done in textbooks of Science and Social Science to meet the requirement of current proposal. Further, guidelines will be needed to issue for board exams in 2028 for appropriate revision/adjustments in class 10 books of these two subjects.

Point-7

CBSE has taken up this proposal in line of guidelines in the National Education Policy – 2020. The NEP -2020 states that all subjects and corresponding assessments, beginning with Mathematics, could be offered at two levels, with students doing some of their subjects at the standard level and some at a higher level.

Point-8

This step of CBSE is aimed at for better preparations of exams like Joint Entrance Exam (JEE). Subject matter of the advance section would of high quality which will reduce dependence of students upon coaching centres.

Point-9

Testing of the proposal will be conducted initially in 30 schools as a pilot project. School will evaluate performance of students internally/at school level first before full implementation of the project all over India.

In the End

The new proposal is a step further to inculcate 21th century skills like critical thinking in students. This proposal may also reduce unwanted burden or fear of the subject from the heads of students by offering a standard syllabus or lower level of difficulty of the above two subjects, especially Science. Moreover, students with a longing to explore more of the subject will be benefitted from the advance syllabus of the subjects.
